Video Games Helping Kids
I love reading good news about video games. It helps to make up for all the bad things people say video games cause. So when I read this story, I just had to share the news with everyone.
The story is basically about this kid stuck in a Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He has a burned foot and has to go through treatment. Apparently this treatment can be much more painful than the burn itself. Up until recently, most medical staff would try the “distraction” technique. When a child was in severe pain from treatments they were rendering in the hospital, the staff would attempt to distract the child. They would offer television, music, toys, etc.
Catherine Butz is conducting a study now to see how a virtual reality game will help with the kids pain. One 14 year old patient reported that prior to playing the game his pain level was at a 10 on a scale of 1-10. After he started playing the game, his pain level dropped to just a 5.
If you’re a gamer than I am sure that you already know the benefits of playing. It is so easy to zone out and be totally involved in the game and think of nothing else. So clearly that would have to help if you were in pain right?
Well you can read the entire story here:
