What Is Game Testing Really All About?

I get a lot of comments like “is this legit?”, “is this real?”, “is it fun?”.  So my purpose today is to answer all of those questions and many more you might have about game testing.

Video Game Testing is a very legitimate, very real business and one that is a requirement with any game development process.  Without game testing, there is no way to know two key points:
1. Does the game work the way it should?
2. Will we be able to market this game and if so, to what group of people?

Before a game can be released to the masses, it absolutely MUST be run through a series of tests.  Test includes more technical areas such as bugs and failures to testing for marketing purposes such as is this a fun game that people will enjoy playing?

VIDEO GAME TESTING IS MANDATORY.  I have yet to run into one single company that does NOT test their games.  Should someone opt to do something like this, they would surely fail and would probably never release another game.

So is it legit yet, is it real absolutely.

So now on to is this fun.  That really depends on what you consider to be fun.  I find that if you truly love something, then you will enjoy it.  But don’t get me wrong, it is work.

Now there are different types of tests that you can partake in.  Some are definitely much more repetitive and can be quite boring, they pertain to glitches.  You find a glitch, you must be able to recreate it and document it so that it can be corrected.  Then there are jobs where you are there solely for marketing purposes.  You need to play a portion of the game and report on the fun factor of it.  Did you enjoy it?  Was it hard, easy etc.  How long did it take you to get past a board in the game?  That sort of thing.

There is a video game testing job out there for everyone who is interested.  The sheer amount of developers in the US and Canada alone is astounding.

You can always try out game testing and then if it’s not for you, well then don’t go forward with it.  You won’t know for sure until you try it, and there are plenty of entry level non experiences jobs available to apply for.
