I’m Under 18, What Can I Do To Get A Game Testing Job?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions I get.
Understand that the reason most game companies do not want to hire people under the age of 18 is not due to their lack of gaming experience, it’s due to the fact that when you’re under 18, companies are limited to the amount of hours you can work in any given day. Legally that is. I mean let’s fact it, many of the greatest gamers are under the age of 18.
So what can you do?
Well you can prepare yourself for a paid game testing gig, by getting experience with unpaid betas.
So now how you can do this?
It’s pretty simple.
1. You can do a Google search under “Unpaid Beta Testing” or “Beta Tester” and see what comes up. Just be aware that any “membership” type sites are looking to charge you for access to jobs and all of the jobs posted will not be for anyone under the age of 18.
2. You can sign up with Microsoft
Anyone can sign up with Microsoft. They only ask for parental permission if you are under 12 years of age.
3. This one has also been around for a while, so I don’t now if they are still testing. It’s called Atriarch
And it’s an online multi-player game also known as an MMORPG. Basically if you’re into games like World of Warcraft, you would probably enjoy beta testing this game.
The most important thing to remember is this, if you are under the age of 18 you can still prepare yourself for the day you turn 18 and want a paying gig. Having beta testing on your resume will make the difference between you getting selected for an interview, and your competition getting selected for the interview.
Once you’ve gotten your foot in the door with an unpaid beta test, you will see that if you do well, many more will follow.
