Love Playing Games Online? Forget It With the Wii!

With the success of Super Smash Brothers Brawl, it’s a shame to come to the realization that Nintendo is so far behind the times when it comes to online interactivity.

For many of you familiar with the Wii online capabilities, you already know this to be fact.  It does not even come close to XBox Live.  XBox Live is simple.  You pay a yearly fee, you log in, you play a game with friends.  You can text them, talk to them on your mic, send them voicemail messages, all right from your couch.  Looking for a friend, just search for their gamertag and bam!  Simple as that.

When it comes to the online gaming options with the Wii, you are sure to be disappointed if you come from the XBox genre of gamers.

For one, it turns out that each of the developers who creates games for the Wii has to come up with their own ways of accessing and playing with others online.  Most games on the Wii require you to use Friend Codes, which must be used for each and every game.  If you’re going to talk with a friend online, it’s going to be done via text IF at all.

So out comes Super Smash Brothers Brawl, and you think hey maybe Nintendo has finally got with it and has expanded their out of date online gaming.  Well guess again.  No dice here.

I believe Nintendo’s intentions for not allowing speech via their online service is one of protecting the young children who play the majority of their games.  Their goal has always been to make their online gaming safe among other things.  I commend them for that.

I think that we all have to understand that each company is different and that doesn’t make one or the other right or wrong.  It all boils down to your core crowd and what they want.  I honestly think that a younger group of gamers play the Wii then the XBox 360 crowd.  Therefore protecting their players by not allowing high scores or talking online is something they feel is best.  I just can’t disagree with that.  I say if you don’t like it, then don’t play it.
