How Do I Get Into Video Game Design?
I am hoping to do another interview sometime soon with an exec of a game company to discuss video game design and how one can get into that field. In the meantime, I thought I would share my thoughts on the process.
First and foremost it’s important to understand the skills you will require to take on a subject such as this. You will either need to attend a university/college to get the skills or you will need to self teach. The choice is yours but either way you’ll need to learn the following points to gain employment in this area:
1. Graphic Design/Animation
Although you may not necessarily be focusing on animation, it is still important to know the basics of this subject. Study computer animation and graphic design and learn how to work with 3-D design.
2. Programming
I cannot stress enough how important this point is. C and C++ are two essentials and this is simply because you need to get a basic understanding of programming. Without that, you will get absolutely nowhere. Now I’m not saying you will necessarily use C or C++ when you get a job with a game developer, in fact you most likely won’t. But understanding the basics of programming and how it works is essential in thes field.
3. Math
Believe it or not a good designer/developer knows his/her math. Working with figures is an important part in making sure things are where they belong.
4. History
I know it sounds absolutely insane that you should take history to design games, but it makes perfect sense. Developing games based on past historical events has been something that happens time and again. Look at the Call of Duty series. Being able to design games that replicate real time events will require you to understand the past.
So if you are thinking about getting into video game design, the above courses are definitely some you should consider. There are many more as well, but the above will give you the basics.
