What is Beta Testing?
This is a commonly asked question by subscribers of my site so I figured it was about time it was properly explained.
In any software development, the second phase of testing is referred to as beta testing. This is basically where a group of people tries out the product. Beta refers to 2nd because that is the second letter of the Greek alphabet. Alpha testing is the first phase of testing in the development process.
Beta testing is “pre-release” testing. This means that it is basically the second round of testing before a product is set to be released on the market.
There are many beta tests one can become involved in and not all pertain to games. So when looking to get involved in beta testing, you must be sure you know what you are looking at. You can become a beta tester for Microsoft testing the newest version of windows. You can beta test for AOL testing out their new version of mail software. And then of course you can test for a company such as EA Sports testing out their newest football game.
Bottom line is that beta test simply refers to a point in time regarding the process of the software development and can pertain to just about anything.
It’s important to know that from a gaming perspective you would search more for QA Tester vs. Beta Tester positions.
