What Are Game Companies Looking For When They Are Hiring?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive. I figured it was time to cover this topic.
What a person is looking for really depends on the job they are trying to fill. Game company HR employees look for most of the very same things that other HR personnel look for in an applicant.
As you may or may not know already, a resume is what will or won’t get you noticed. So if you don’t have a great resume put together, you can pretty much kiss your chances of getting a job goodbye.
Did you know that most employers only spend 8 seconds looking at a resume? It’s during that short period of time that they quickly determine if they are going to give it a further look or throw it in the trash. So determining how to make your resume stand out in the crowd is by far the most important step you’ll take on your way to finding a job in gaming.
So what exactly are they looking for? Here are the basics:
1. At a quick glance, can they see what job you are applying for? Remember there can be multiple positions open within one company at any given time. A clean crisp objective will do the trick.
2. Do you have the qualifications that are listed in the job you applied for? Each resume submission should really be tailored to fit the job you’re after. You can insert buzzwords. In game tester positions, that would be keywords like: game tester, avid gamer, listing gaming achievements.
3. If experience in the field is required, do you have it? If an employer requires you have previous experience in the field and then your resume does not demonstrate this experience, you can pretty much forget all about it.
4. Skills. Are the skills they need clearly visible? This is when a specific skill section comes in very handy. Again you can list the skills that are important for each position you apply for, as long as you genuinely have them.
That’s it. Pretty simple, pretty straightforward. Presentation is everything.
