Video Game Testers-How Do I Become One?
I have written many many times on this subject, but with the overwhelming requests I get I felt it necessary to once again visit this subject.
“Becoming” a video game tester is not really the hard part. It’s finding the right positions based on your current qualifications and the right place based on your location.
It takes time and research, this is just like any other job except it is a job testing video games and not pushing paper.
It does require a certain amount of skill to test games. You must be a good communicator, have some general knowledge of computers and how they work (usually word and excel programs are the necessities) and be over the age of 18 with a HS diploma or equivalent. Now understand I am talking Entry Level game testing jobs. Not hire level QA Supervisor positions.
So now that you know what is required of you, where does one look?
Well there are memberships that help. Just like the one I promote on my site. Some work, some don’t. I have used many and to date only promote Gamer Testing Ground on my website. That is because I feel comfortable in what the membership has to offer and that it’s not all about getting someone’s money and running with it.
You’re other option is just to search. There are thousands upon thousands of game companies out there. Small, medium and large. You can start by using any search tool. Such as google, yahoo, etc. Search for game companies you are already familiar with or just use the term “game companies in” and place your state at the end of the search. You’ll be amazed at how much you come up with.
You can also use job posting sites such as Careerbuilder and Monster and search for terms like, game tester, game testing, QA and see how much comes up just from that alone.
There are many things a gamer can do to get into doing something they love, it just takes making a decision on what you’re going to do to accomplish your goal and then doing it. Simple as that.
